The Paradox of Goal Setting

Raise your hand if you’ve set a goal that you didn’t achieve.
Why Some People Won’t Get A Better Job, Save More, Or Lose Weight This Year

We overheard a couple friends catching up in a coffee shop. Check out the surprising reaction:
“Hey, do you have any New Year’s resolutions?”
“No, they’re a waste of time. I believe in living in the moment and enjoying life. How about you?”
“I guess I have some resolutions – make more money, cut costs, and lose some of this gut.”
“Good for you!” as he rolls his eyes in disbelief.
The Groupon Binky Effect

“Hey, did you get that Groupon email for today? $25 for $50 worth at Nordstrom Rack!”
“No way! I’ll check it out when I get home after work.”
“You better check it out now because if they sell out, you can’t get the deal.”
“Shoot, you’re right. Let me call you back. I have an app for that.”
Every day, millions of people across 88 U.S. cities and 22 countries, make impulse buying decisions based on the fear of losing their binky.
Mind Hack: How To Embrace Irrational Expectations

We recently sat down with a business owner who runs a local studio. She’s been in business for several years so when she asked us to take a look at her finances and investments, we were excited about the opportunity to help.
What we learned surprised us.
The Psychology Behind Saying: “It’s Worth It”

One of my good friends is 35, has a great job, two kids and a lovely wife. He was asking me why he felt like he made good money (over $150K plus bonus) but was running on a treadmill, unable to save much. I sat down with him and his wife to look over their finances and realized they were spending $2K/month for preschool. I asked one simple question: “Why?”
This is where it got heated.
His wife responded, “I know it costs a lot of money, but it’s worth it.” I’m convinced that this phrase was invented by Private School Boards BECAUSE IT’S SIMPLY NOT TRUE FOR EVERYONE. YOU ARE NOT GETTING A BETTER EDUCATION BECAUSE YOU’RE PAYING FOR IT.
